Is there a statute of limitations on the collection of consumer debt in California ?
Nov. 18, 2009
Why yes, it is four years on a written contract and two years on an oral contract. That time runs from the date of default, in other words from when you stopped paying the debt. People should be aware that many collection agencies try to collect "zombie debt", that is they may even file a lawsuit on a debt that is so old it is legally extinguished by the passage of time.
